From Baghdad Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi left an influence that is still felt today. 

He was one of the great mathematicians, and his work on algebra helped establish the field, while his name is also linked to the origin of the word (algorithm.) 

His scholarship extended beyond mathematics to astronomy and geography.
