Ibn al-Baytar traveled through al-Andalus, North Africa, and the eastern Mediterranean studying plants and medicines firsthand.
He compiled his knowledge in a major encyclopedia of drugs and foods covering around 1,400 medicinal and nutritional substances, drawing on many earlier sources as well as his own observations.
He became one of the greatest botanists and pharmacologists of Islamic civilization.
