Kanouté from France… A Faith He Never Compromised

Frederic Kanoute, the French football star of Malian heritage, was one of the finest strikers of his generation. He played for several major clubs, including Lyon, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sevilla.

He embraced Islam in his early twenties, and from that moment, his faith became a central part of his life, giving him balance, purpose, and strength amid the pressures of professional football and fame.

One of his most well-known acts of conviction came while playing for Sevilla, when he refused to wear a jersey displaying the logo of a betting company because gambling is prohibited in Islam. He chose to remain true to his beliefs, placing his faith above money and public attention.

Kanouté also helped preserve a Muslim prayer space in Seville and later contributed to efforts supporting the establishment of a mosque and an Islamic center in the city.
